Correction Procedures
PRK
in a nutshell
Unlike LASIK,
PRK does not entail cutting a flap
in the cornea; instead, the laser
is applied directly to the corneal
tissue. The corneal flap created in
LASIK acts as a ‘bandage’
following the procedure; because PRK
does not have this natural bandage,
a special contact lens is worn following
the procedure. To find out more, click

LTK
for farsightedness
LTK is a refractive procedure used
to treat farsightedness;
it is a process whereby small dot-shaped
ablations are made with a laser, allowing
the corneal tissue to expand. This
in effect steepens the curvature of
the cornea.

ALK
in a nutshell
ALK is a procedure typically used
to treat mild farsightedness (hyperopia)
and severe nearsightedness
(myopia). In this procedure, tissue
layers in the middle portion of the
cornea are removed with a special
instrument called a microkeratome.

RK
and AK
Two similar but rarely used procedures
exist to treat myopia and astigmatism.
Radial Keratotomy (RK) treats myopia
through the use of spoke-like incisions
in the cornea. This allows the cornea
to flatten, in the process correcting
the nearsighted patient’s vision.
AK uses a similar technique to correct
for astigmatism. Read on to learn
more.
