What is LASIK?
LASIK
is a refractive
surgery procedure used to correct
for farsightedness (hyperopia), nearsightedness
(myopia), and astigmatism. The term
stands for laser in situ keratomileusis.
LASIK can only be performed by an
ophthalmologist (eye doctor), and
should only be performed by one who
specializes in refractive surgery.
LASIK is performed
by making a small ‘flap’
in the patient’s cornea. This
is done with a small scalpel called
a microkeratome, which is made specifically
for LASIK. After creating the corneal
flap, the surgeon utilizes a laser
to ablate the stroma – the tissue
layer located underneath the flap.
Certain
risks
do accompany any surgical procedure,
and LASIK is no exception. Some of
the risks associated with LASIK include
night glare and halos, dry eye, and,
in rare cases, permanent vision loss
(this is extremely uncommon). A more
common after effect of LASIK is under/over
correction. When this occurs, the
patient may have to continue glasses
or contacts for a period of time.
In most cases, the surgeon is able
to perform a second procedure to give
the patient more favorable vision.
The
best way to prevent side effects with
LASIK is to find a good refractive
surgeon. Luckily, Chicago
is blessed with some of the finer
surgeons in the country. In any case,
conducting extensive research with
regards to the doctor you choose is
paramount to achieving a good result.
It is highly advisable to meet with
at least two doctors before making
this decision.
